PhD (Publication Pathway)
Fast Track to PhD
Programme Overview
PhD by Publication (18-Month Supervised Route)
-
The PhD by Publication (18-Month Supervised Route) is an accelerated doctoral pathway designed for experienced researchers, senior professionals, and academics who already possess a substantial body of publishable or published research.
-
The programme enables candidates to consolidate, enhance, and critically integrate their existing outputs into a coherent doctoral thesis, supported by structured supervision and methodological guidance.
-
Unlike a traditional PhD, the focus is not on generating a single monograph from scratch, but on demonstrating an original and sustained contribution to knowledge through a portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, complemented by a rigorous critical commentary.

Aims of the Programme
The programme aims to enable candidates to:
-
Achieve doctoral recognition for an established body of high-quality research
-
Demonstrate originality, coherence, and scholarly impact across multiple outputs
-
Develop a unifying theoretical, methodological, or conceptual framework
-
Articulate their contribution to knowledge within a recognised disciplinary field
-
Successfully prepare for and defend a doctoral viva voce examination
Programme Structure (18 Months)
The programme is delivered through structured milestones, combining academic supervision, research development support, and formal review points.
Phase 1: Admission, Audit & Framework Development (Months 1–3)
-
Formal audit of existing publications and near-publishable works
-
Mapping outputs against doctoral criteria (originality, contribution, coherence)
-
Identification of gaps, supplementary outputs, or reframing needs
-
Development of an overarching doctoral narrative and research framework
-
Approval of final submission plan
Outcome: Confirmed doctoral submission structure and timeline
Phase 2: Enhancement, Synthesis & Publication Support (Months 4–12)
-
Refinement or completion of journal papers, chapters, or equivalent outputs
-
Strengthening of theoretical positioning and methodological consistency
-
Supervised alignment of publications into a coherent knowledge trajectory
-
Optional targeted publication strategy support (field-appropriate journals)
-
Ongoing supervisory reviews against doctoral standards
Outcome: Finalised portfolio of outputs ready for doctoral integration
Phase 3: Critical Commentary & Thesis Assembly (Months 13–16)
-
Development of the critical commentary (typically 15,000–25,000 words)
-
Explicit articulation of originality, contribution, and impact
-
Reflection on epistemological and methodological positioning
-
Integration of publications into a unified thesis submission
-
Outcome: Examination-ready doctoral thesis by publication
Phase 4: Examination Preparation & Viva (Months 17–18)
-
Pre-viva review and mock examination
-
Viva strategy and defence preparation
-
Final submission and oral examination
-
Post-viva revisions (if required)
-
Outcome: Award of PhD, subject to examiners’ recommendations

Supervision and Academic Support
Candidates receive structured doctoral supervision, typically including:
-
A Principal Supervisor with subject expertise
-
Regular scheduled supervision meetings (online)
-
Written feedback on publications and commentary drafts
-
Milestone reviews to ensure progress and compliance
-
Examination preparation and viva coaching
The supervision model is developmental and scaffolded, ensuring candidates unfamiliar with UK doctoral examination norms are fully supported.

-
Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification
-
Present a substantial body of published or publishable research outputs
